DID YOU KNOW that the AFL, known in South Africa as ‘footyWILD’, has over 17,000 players across four provinces including the Western Cape? DID YOU KNOW that on Saturday 7th February 2009 two elite Australian AFL teams – the Collingwood Magpies and the Fremantle Dockers will clash in a fast passed and thrilling game of football on the hallowed turf of Newlands? Aussie Rules Football at Newlands? I’d like to see that! The match will mark the opening fixture of the 2009 AFL NAB Cup Season and will be broadcast live on Channel 7 in Australia and will be the first time an AFL pre-season competition game will be held in South Africa. Going back as far as 1858, Victorian cricketer Tom Wills published a letter in a local sporting paper suggesting cricketers keep fit in winter by playing football and the game of Aussie Rules was born. To this day the player cross pollination that exists in Australia between cricket and Australian football is significant and involved a range of innovative partnerships exist between Australian football and Cricket fraternities around development, promotion, advocacy and facility development. All cricket fields and facilities in Australia are multi-purposed to accommodate Australian football in winter (outside the cricket season) - from small community ovals to international stadiums. If you love your sport, then you will love footyWILD – a breathtaking sport that combines the sublime kicking skills of soccer, the powerful tackling of rugby, the speed and agility of athletics and the aerial grace of basketball.
